How Many Trips Do You Need for Dental Implants in Colombia?

Short answer: Most patients need two trips: one to place the implants and a second, three to six months later, to place the final crowns. Each trip usually takes 7 to 10 days, including a follow-up appointment before you fly home. Patients who need bone grafting may need a longer healing period, and a small number of cases can be done with fewer visits.

Why can't it all be done in one trip?

Because your bone needs time to bond with the implant. This process, called osseointegration, is what allows an implant to handle the force of chewing. Placing the final crown before the bone has matured increases the risk that the implant will fail.

What happens on the first trip?

On the first trip we confirm your plan with a CT scan, then place the implants under local anesthesia. Plan to stay 7 to 10 days. This includes a follow-up appointment to check your healing before you fly home. Most patients go back to normal activities within a few days.

What happens between trips?

During the next three to six months, your bone gradually grows onto the implant surface:

  • Days 1–14: A blood clot forms around the implant and releases signals that start the healing process.

  • Weeks 2–8: The bone remodels. Some cells remove damaged bone while others build new bone. This is when the implant needs to be protected most.

  • Months 3–6: The new bone matures and the implant is ready for its crown.

You can live and work normally during this time. Not every case receives a temporary tooth between trips; it depends on the location of the implant and your treatment plan. You'll know in advance what to expect.

What happens on the second trip?

We check that the implant is stable, take impressions or digital scans, and place your final crowns. Plan 7 to 10 days for this trip as well, including a follow-up appointment to check your bite and the fit of your crowns before you fly home.

When is one trip possible?

Some patients qualify for "immediate loading," where a temporary tooth is attached on the day of surgery. This depends on bone quality, implant stability and your bite. Even then, the final crown is usually placed on a later visit.

When might you need three trips?

If you need bone regeneration or a sinus lift before implants can be placed, we may need an extra healing phase. You'll know this from your preliminary plan, before you book any flights.

How to plan your trips

  • Book your video consultation first, then your flights, once you have your preliminary plan.

  • Avoid scheduling surgery right before a long-haul flight; leave a few days to recover.

  • Keep your return date flexible if possible.
