Dental Implants in Bogotá, Colombia: A Complete Guide for International Patients
Short answer: Getting dental implants in Bogotá usually involves a video consultation from home, a first trip to place the implants, a healing period of three to six months, and a second trip for the final crowns. Choosing a specialist who checks your gum and bone health first is the most important decision you'll make.
I'm Dr. Jacobo Bendayan, a periodontist and implant specialist in Bogotá, Colombia. I consult in English, and many of my patients travel from abroad. This guide answers the questions they ask me most often.
Why do people travel to Bogotá for dental implants?
Most international patients come for two reasons: treatment costs are generally lower than in the United States, Canada or Europe, and they can be treated by a specialist rather than a general dentist. Bogotá also has direct flights from many North American and European cities.
Cost should never be the only reason, though. An implant is a surgical procedure, and the result depends on planning, the health of your gums and bone, and follow-up care.
Why does it matter that your implant dentist is a periodontist?
A periodontist is a specialist in the gums and the bone that support teeth. That matters because implants fail most often due to problems in those tissues, not because of the titanium itself.
Before placing an implant, I check for gum disease, measure the available bone on a 3D CT scan and decide whether you need bone regeneration or a gum graft first. Skipping that step is one of the main reasons implants run into trouble years later.
How does the process work step by step?
Video consultation from home. We review your dental history, photos and any X-rays or CT scans you already have. You can book it by WhatsApp or through the form on my website.
Preliminary treatment plan. You receive a written plan with the steps, number of trips and estimated cost before you book your flight.
First trip: evaluation and implant placement. We take a CT scan in Bogotá, confirm the plan and place the implants under local anesthesia using digital planning.
Healing at home (3–6 months). Your bone bonds to the implant. This process is called osseointegration.
Second trip: final crowns. We place your permanent teeth and check your bite.
Each trip usually takes 7 to 10 days, including a follow-up appointment before you fly home.
How much do dental implants cost in Bogotá?
The cost depends on how many implants you need, whether you need bone grafting and the type of crown. Because every case is different, I don't publish fixed prices. You receive an estimate with your preliminary plan before you travel, and an exact written quote after your evaluation in Bogotá.
Be cautious with prices that seem far below the market. Very low prices often leave out the CT scan, the abutment, the final crown or follow-up visits.
What if I've been told I don't have enough bone?
In many cases, bone can be rebuilt with bone regeneration or grafting before or during implant placement. Whether you're a candidate depends on how much bone is missing and where.
Practical tips for your trip
Entry requirements: Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK and the EU generally don't need a visa for short tourist stays, but check the official requirements from Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) before booking.
Altitude: Bogotá sits about 2,600 meters (8,500 feet) above sea level. Stay hydrated your first days and tell me about any heart or lung conditions.
Flying after surgery: After a routine implant placement, most patients can fly home within a few days. After procedures involving the sinus, I'll tell you how long to wait.
Where to stay: Northern Bogotá has many hotels and apartments within a short ride of the practice.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to get dental implants in Colombia?
It can be, when you choose a qualified specialist, get a proper CT scan and have a clear follow-up plan. Ask about the dentist's specialty, experience and what happens if you have a problem after you go home.
Do you speak English?
Yes. Consultations, treatment plans and follow-up can all be done in English.
Can I get teeth in one day?
Some patients can receive a temporary tooth on the day of surgery, but not everyone. It depends on bone quality and the stability of the implant when it's placed.
What happens if I have a problem after I go home?
We stay in touch by WhatsApp and video call. For routine check-ups between visits, you'll also need a dentist in your home country.
How long do dental implants last?
Long-term reviews show more than 90% of implants still in place after ten years (Moraschini et al., 2015), especially with healthy gums and regular check-ups.
